I’ve been crazing snickerdoodle cookies ever since reading To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before a few weeks ago. The main character makes them a lot for her little sister, and the author makes them sound so delicious! I decided to make them this weekend, since it’s been a few weeks since I made cookies. Well, they were the perfect choice- sweet without being decadent, excellent with either milk or tea, and small enough in size that you can eat a few in a sitting. Also, the secret ingredient made them extra delicious - who knew a little greek yogurt makes cookies so scrumptious?!

To make -

Whisk together 2 1/2 cups flour, 1 teaspoon baking soda, 2 teaspoons cream of tartar, 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon, and 1/2 teaspoon sea salt. Set aside. Next brown the butter - cut 1 cup unsalted butter into cubes and constantly stir on the stove until it froths and small brown bits begin to firm. Let cool.

In a mixing bowl cream together the butter and 1 1/4 cups brown sugar and 1/2 cup granulated sugar. Next add in 1 egg plus 1 egg yolk (I used this egg separator and am really pleased with how well it worked), 1 tablespoon vanilla extract, and 1 tablespoon plain greek yogurt. Cover the dough and let it chill in the refrigerator at least 30 minutes.

Once you are ready to bake the cookies heat the oven to 350 and mix together 1/4 cup sugar and 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon in a small bowl. Form the dough into small balls and roll in the cinnamon sugar. Bake for 9 minutes and then enjoy with a cold glass of milk.

It’s the weekend again! Aren’t short weeks wonderful? I get so excited to get to hang out with my husband all weekend, even if we aren’t doing anything. We’ve currently been staying in since Winter Is Here and watching old movies and playing games. This past weekend we started a major jigsaw puzzle phase, which is so fun. We killed a 1000 piece puzzle in one afternoon somehow, time just flew by. If you ever need to pass time without thinking about anything, do a puzzle, haha.

The only not fun thing is that winter is killing my immune system. I keep getting sick and I am so over it. I hate being on medicine, it gives me such terrible stomach aches, and as I said - I’m over it. For instance, the newest ailment this week is an eye infection on my eyelid and I feel like I look like a muppet - hence the lack of photos of my face this week ;) Anyways, I’m drinking lots more orange juice than usual and hopefully my immune system gets back on track soon. On the bright side, it’s given me more time on the couch to roam the internet, and I’ve found lots of goodies for you this week!

I check in on what’s going on with American Girl dolls every now and then, I loved them so much as a kid, and the newest one sounds darling!

The colors of the new Tuckernuck scarves are stunning. I can’t decide whether I like the pink or light blue best - they both will be perfect for late winter and spring looks, and look like Hermes scarves!

How To Combat Dry Winter Skin

I don’t know about you, but the cold and dry winter weather has done a number on my skin. I’ve woken up with so many dry, flaky patches and my lips are constantly chapped. To say the least, it’s not a good look (and it’s not comfortable either). To combat this “winter skin” I’ve brought out the big guns - thick products full of moisturizing agents - and tried to be extra diligent about taking care of my skin. Thankfully, it’s made a big difference and I feel like my skin is coming back to life. Here are my favorite tips - which aren’t all about buying new products by the way. There are lots of ways to take care of your skin that don’t involve any extra $.

Winter Skincare Products For Your Face
  1. Use lots of moisturizer. Make sure you slather it on morning and night, and use a thick layer. Also reach for products that don’t have a lot of added fragrance or other facial irritants. Even if your skin isn’t normally sensitive, gentler products will soothe your winter skin a lot better - excessive dryness breaks down your moisture barrier, so you don’t want to risk irritating it further. I’m currently using the Juice Beauty Nutrient Moisturizer at night (it really makes my skin dewy!) and Embryolisse in the morning (it’s great under makeup, it makes everything apply smoothly and doesn’t feel greasy).

  2. Skip physical exfoliators. Your skin is already chapped, you don’t want to cut it up further with scrubs. Instead, look for chemical exfoliants. These will help repair your skin without tearing it up. If you need one, I love Prism by Herbivore, and I’ve heard great things about Glossier Solution. The Prism makes my skin look more even, and I feel like my other products apply a lot smoother. Plus it’s never irritated my skin, which is rare.

  3. Use masks to provide extra TLC. Moisturizing masks are a great way to add some extra hydration, and detox masks can help combat pimples so you don’t have to reach for harsh anti-astringents. My favorite detox mask is Glossier Galaxy Greens (it’s really good at eliminating pimples when you can tell they are coming but haven’t sprouted yet), and I’ve heard great things about the Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask. I’ll actually be picking it up once I’ve used up my stash of product samples!

  4. Drink lots of water and get sleep!

Winter Skincare Products For Your Lips
  1. Apply lip balm before you go to sleep, and as often as you can throughout the day. I keep mine next to me so I can keep reapplying after I eat or drink. If you need a new lip balm the best one I’ve ever used is Dr. Lipp.

  2. Use a lip scrub so that the lip balm penetrates your skin and doesn’t just flake off with your dry skin. You can use a slightly damp toothbrush or a face cloth. Apply lip balm, and then gently rub the toothbrush or wash cloth in small circles for about two minutes. You can also use a lip scrub, like this one French Girl Lip Polish.

  3. Switch out lipstick and lipgloss for tinted lip balm. I personally use the Fresh Sugar ones; I find them to be very moisturizing and the colors are so pretty (Petal and Spice are my favorite).

Winter Skincare Products for Your Body
  1. The skin on my body gets the driest - I call it the cities and it plagues me all year round, but especially in the winter. Anyone else? One thing that helps a lot is to put on yoga pants immediately after I get out of the shower/bath. I read it holds in moisture and I’ve noticed a big difference.

  2. Always apply moisturizer when you get out of the shower/tub. Personally, the only one I will use is Burt’s Bees with Aloe and Buttermilk. It’s the only moisturizer that doesn’t make my keratosis pilaris worse, and it soothes my dry legs in winter. I think any product makes a difference if you don’t have sensitivities though, there are so many good inexpensive ones out there like Eucerin; just make sure there aren’t a lot of added fragrances, it can cause extra irritation which is the last thing you want.

  3. Use a scrub with essential oils to slough off dead skin so the moisturizer can get through and repair your skin. I always pick up a small container at whole foods.

  4. Try and take less hot baths and showers. To be honest, I never manage to do this my self because a steaming how shower is one of my favorite things in the whole world, but I’m sure it would help if I did!

Doesn’t the Midge Maisel always have the perfect face of makeup on the show? I love the bright pop of lipstick she always has. Watching her rock so many corals, reds and pinks on the show has made me want to step outside my beauty comfort zone and start adding a bit more color to my lips. I made these chocolate raspberry bars over the weekend and they were the perfect combination of sweet and gooey. The raspberry jam mixed together with the melted chocolate tasted scrumptious, it was the perfect treat for a cozy winter day.

I made so many cookies over the holidays that I have been trying to branch out and try more cakes and bars. I’ve been scrolling through pinterest amassing recipes to try, and decided to mix in white chocolate with this recipe and make it a little more gooey.

To make:

Preheat oven to 350. In a mixer or a food processor blend together 2 cups flour, 1/2 cup packed brown sugar, 1/4 tsp salt and 1 cup chilled butter. Once it forms a dough, remove 1/4 cup and put it in the refrigerator. Take the rest of the dough and press it into a greased 9x9 pan and bake for 12 minutes. On the stove, melt together 1 cup chocolate chips and 1 can sweetened condensed milk. Once the crumb topping is done, pour this chocolate mix on top. Then layer on the 1/4 cup of crumbs in the fridge, followed by table spoons of raspberry jam evenly spaced all over the top, and 1 cup chocolate and white chocolate chips (more to taste). Bake for 35 minutes. Enjoy with a cold glass of milk!

Happy Friday everyone! Did you all have a good week? It was a snowy one in D.C.! My husband had his first ever snow day on Monday, and we went out to see what D.C. looked like after the storm. Seeing the Washington and Lincoln Memorials covered in snow was surreal, almost like walking through a living snow globe! I even got to throw some snow balls into the ice covered reflecting pond.

Are you excited for a holiday weekend? I love how right when you finish getting organized after the holidays a long weekend sneaks up on you, it’s always the best surprise. We are hoping to enjoy ours with a local ski trip, weather depending. I haven’t been in a number of years and I am so excited to get back on the slopes!

Jewelry To Add Glamour To Any Outfit

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again - a well placed piece of jewelry can transform any basic pairing of clothes into a stylish outfit. Earrings, bracelets and necklaces are a wonderful way to update your wardrobe and add so much glamour to your wardrobe staples. Take jeans and a basic tee and wear different earrings or a different necklace and you have ten outfits, no problem. Plus, those outfits have so much style and personality because of the way that you accessorized them to look like you. For instance, my style is to add big and colorful statement earrings to a white tee, whereas my friend Samantha might add some drape-y necklaces and the top looks completely different - but both look glamorous! I have been looking for the perfect “my lips but better” lipstick for ages and I finally found it right before the holidays. Chanel’s Le Rouge Duo Ultra Tenue Ultra Wear Lipcolor in Merry Rose is, quite simply, the perfect shade. It is a nude pink that adds warmth to your face but still matches everything. Plus, it lasts forever, even through eating, and has a lovely shine that makes your whole face look awake and happy.

Chanel’s Merry Rose comes in a double sided applicator. One side has the long wear lipcolor, and the other side is a gloss. I like to put on a couple layers of the lipstick, wait a minute, and then add the gloss. I then touch up with the gloss throughout the day.

Here, I paired Merry Rose with a light smokey eye, a subtle contour, and a little bit of bronzer. Plus lots of mascara. To be specific, I used on my eyes I used Urban Decay’s Naked Basics 2 for eyeshadow, Charlotte Tilbury eye kohl in Audrey to line my waterline and her black eyeliner on top, Trish McEvoy voluming mascara and Anastasia brows in taupe plus her clear gel. On the rest of my face I used my beloved Charlotte Tilbury Magic Foundation and Magic concealer, her Filmstar bronze and Glow, the Tom Ford Soleil bronzer and as a finishing touch the Glow and Cheek blush which adds the prettiest subtle pink glow (truly, this blush glows).

I’ve used Chanel’s Merry Rose with a nude eye, a smokey eye, a cat eye and every shade of pink blush and or bronzer and it matches everything. Plus it matches every outfit. It’s one of those shades that if you could only wear one lip color for the rest of your life Merry Rose would be it.

Finally, I like that the Le Rouge formula lasts all day but isn’t drying, especially if you exfoliate your lips at night. I’m not the best at reapplying lipstick throughout the day, so a long wear shade is perfect for me.

The Perfect Winter Treat

Apple Rum Cake Recipe

In anticipation of our D.C. snow day I have been laying in lots of warm and cozy food, sweet treats and fun movies. Since it will be our first real snow storm, I wanted to bake something special for the occasion, and this apple rum cake was perfect! It’s sweet without being cloying, and the top has cartelized sugar on top for the perfect crunch. Plus, since it’s full of apples it’s appropriate to nibble on all day long!

It was super simple to make-

Preheat the oven to 350 and prepare a cake pan (I love, love this PAM baking spray with flour. It really stops baked goods from sticking to the pan). Next, combine 1 cup of flour, 1 tsp baking powder and a pinch of salt in a mixing bow and set aside. In another bowl, combine 1 stick of unsalted butter, 1/2 cup sugar and 2 tsp vanilla. Once creamed together, add in 2 eggs. Next, mix in the flour mixture and 2 tbsp rum (the rum is optional). Once everything is combined and there are no lumps, stir in 2 peeled and chopped apples.

Transfer to prepared cake pan, and sprinkle the top with 2 tbsp sugar. Bake for 40 minutes or until a tooth pick comes out clean.

Then, eat! And watch the winter world go by.

Happy Friday everyone! Did you all have a good week? Mine was okay, I got sick over the weekend and was on quarantine most of this week which made the days kind of drag. I’m a person who loves to be on the go all the time so some forced relaxation was not my speed but also just what the doctor ordered. My Favorite New Pink Sweater

J.Crew 1988 rollneck sweater

Now that the temperatures are dropping in D.C. it’s time to bring out all my heavier sweaters. My favorite is this J.Crew 1988 rollneck sweater in pink. I love the light pink color, and it’s heavy without being itchy. Aren’t itchy sweaters just awful? Plus the way that the sweater is knit down the sides is very flattering.

The rollneck sweater runs large, I sized down and it is still loose fitting. It’s comfortable to wear all day, and it washes really well.

I paired the sweater with my skinny jeans and my Ugg McKay boots, thought in the pictures you see I switched to my Superga sneakers because we had to walk through some mud and it hailed out for a few minutes. My ankles were cold but my boots were saved, which is really all that matters.

Pink sweaters are my favorite item of clothing right now. They make me feel cozy yet feminine, and I think the hue brings out winter’s rosy cheeks. Here are some more of my favorites -
