My Favorite Oscar Dresses and a Champagne Muffin Recipe

Did you watch the Oscars? Or the red carpet? Seeing all the beautiful gowns go down the red carpet is one of my favorite television events of the year. This year there were so many gorgeous dresses and makeup looks, but here are my favorites -

Constance Wu Oscars 2019

My favorite dress! She looks like Belle, which is the way that all dresses should be judged ;)

Michelle Yeoh Oscars dress 2019

Isn’t this dress on Michelle Yeoh just stunning? I particularly love the neckline, it’s so regal.

Regina King Oscars dress 2019
Gemma Chan Oscars dres
Allison Janney Oscars dress 2019

Allison Janney always looks phenomenal and this years was no exception. I think she is just fabulous.

Emma Stone Oscars dress 2019

Doesn’t Emma Stone look like a a goddess?

Charlize Theron Oscars dress 2019

Charlize Theron looks so different in this outfit than she normally does on the red carpet and I love it!

Champagne Muffins

Also, in honor of the Oscars I made champagne muffins. They ended up tasting quite delicious, and I love that I can eat them for breakfast all week long. Champagne for breakfast just seems so Hollywood ; ) Plus they were easy to make! Here’s the recipe:

Whisk together 1 2/3 cup flour, 1 cup sugar, 1/4 tsp baking powder and one 1 tsp baking soda. In a separate bowl cream together 3/4 cup salted butter, 3 egg whites, 1/2 cup sour cream, and 1/2 cup + 2 tbsp champagne. Add in the dry ingredients, being sure not to over mix. Pour the batter into a greased cupcake tray (or use cupcake liners). Bake at 350 for 18-20 minutes. Let cool.

Enjoy! And I highly recommend doing a muffin toast!

Did you make anything special for the Oscars? Or do you have a favorite special occasion dessert?

Happy Friday

Portofino

Happy Friday everyone! Is anyone else excited for the Oscars this weekend and I’m so excited! Every year I make a decadent dinner, put on some old costume jewelry to pretend I’m at the event, and watch the show with my nearest and dearest while filling out Oscars score cards and commentating on all the speeches and dresses. Then for the next few weeks I bing on all the movies that won. It’s one of my favorite traditions!

Oscars bingo cards are always my favorite and these look very cute

NARS Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencil in Intriguing Swatches & Review

NARS Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencil in Intriguing

Today I’m excited to share a more old school type of blog post where I share a review and swatches of one of my more recent beauty purchases, the NARS Matte Lipstick Pencil in Intriguing. I always love these types of posts when I’m searching the internet for cosmetics, so I’m excited to “pay it forward” if you will and write posts with basic facts about the color and formula of products (like I did with Chanel’s lipstick in Merry Rose).

NARS Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencil in Intriguing

The pictures shows Intriguing looks on my lips without any other lip color or lip liner. I did use a primer to help with longevity and to neutralize my natural lip color, which means that this is the color of the lipstick that anyone would get if they prime their lips no matter how pigmented their lips naturally are.

NARS Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencil in Intriguing

I like the rosy color of Intriguing, and that it isn’t too pink. I call it a nude rose. Also, if you are wondering, another day I wore it without priming my lips first and then it veered into a more rosy red color.

NARS Velvet Matte Lipstick Pencil in Intriguing

The Matte Lipstick Pencil formula lasts for several hours without eating or drinker, and it’s easy to reapply since the pencil fits in any sized purse. It also layers nicely, meaning it doesn’t get too caked or start to pill. The only draw back is that the formula is rather drying, but I think that can be said of any matte formula.

Overall I’d give it a 4/5, which is a pretty high review from me! I really liked the nude rose color of Intriguing, and the fact that you get two colors in one depending on whether or not you prime your lips. Plus the pencil is so convenient to carry around for touchups and makes for an easy application process as well.

Have you tried any new lipstick you really liked lately? I’m all ears!

Heart Shaped Lava Cake

For Valentine’s Day last week I made a lava cake for dessert. It felt so indulgent to pull a hot and gooey cake out of the oven and immediately dig in. Normally when I bake cookies I let them cool and wait until after dinner to take a bite, but that’s not how you do it with lava cake. Instead you immediately take a giant forkful, and guys it is so delicious! Since it was Valentine’s Day I used a heart shaped pan, but I’m definitely going to make this recipe again with individual ramekins.

To make:

Place 1/2 stick unsalted butter and 3 oz semi sweet chocolate together in a microwave safe bowl for 20 seconds. Stir and microwave in 20 second intervals until everything is combined and melted. Next, whisk in 1/4 cup confectioners sugar and 1/4 cup brown sugar. Then add in 1 egg and 1 egg white, 1/2 tsp vanilla, 1/4 cup flour and a dash of salt. Bake at 450 for 9-11 minutes, so that it’s still jiggly. After 1 minute flip upside down onto a plate to remove the cake from the pan and then enjoy!!

Do you have a new favorite dessert? I love trying new recipes, so I’m all ears for good recommendations!

Glossier Milky Oil Makeup Remover

Glossier Milky Oil Makeup Remover

Today I’m really excited to announce the launch Glossier’s newest product, an eye makeup remover! It’s called Milky Oil and it uses both micellar water and makeup-erasing oil to erase all that stubborn eye makeup that’s waterproof or long wearing. I’m super excited about this product, and here’s why-

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I had an eye infection, well it turned out it was a a large stye under my eyelid that had gotten inflamed. Since then I’ve been making a huge effort to make sure every last flake of eye makeup is removed each night (not that I didn’t before, I just have been extra extra diligent) and looking for a new makeup remover. My beloved Bioderma doesn’t work very well on eyeliner, and all of the “eye makeup remover” products I have tried or researched are either $$$, don’t work very well, or involve one time use pads which isn’t my favorite. I was getting pretty frustrated in my research and then, as has happened before, Glossier came to the rescue with a new product!

Glossier Milky Oil Makeup Remover

I love that Milky Oil can be used with a cotton round, or you can even use it in the shower if you want to reduce waste. To use it you just shake the product to combine the micellar water and makeup-erasing oil and wipe it across your eyelids a bunch of times. Unlike other products, like makeup removing wipes, Milky Oil won’t tug at your delicate eye skin or rub and cause irritation. Plus, the packaging is pink : )

Finally, and one of the best parts, Milky Oil is only $12 ($15 CAD, £10 GBP, €12 EU, 90 DKK, 120 SEK) and you got 10% off your first Glossier order with my rep link, here.

Tell me, what’s your go to makeup remover? Have you used Glossier products before?

Happy Friday

a few of my favorite things

Happy Friday everyone! Did you all have a nice week? A nice Valentine’s Day? We stayed in and ate homemade pasta and lava cake. It came out really delicious, I can’t wait to share the recipe with you guys! I’d never made one before, and I have a feeling it is going to be one of those desserts I made on repeat now. Other than that it was a pretty quiet week, very rainy which meant staying in and watching movies and old television at night. With the Oscars coming up I’ve been inspired to watch some of the old winners, so we have Darkest Hour in the queue along with Bohemian Rhapsody. Does anyone have any other recommendations? I’ve been searching for a new television show to watch, and haven’t found anything I’m really excited about - we like quirky and funny, not too dark. Think Friends and Parks & Rec.

Anyways, here are some other things I’ve been enjoying this week -

I have the Rifle Paper Co x Jansport pouch pictured above and I’m obsessed. The pattern is so darling and it’s the perfect size to fit into your handbag for all of your beauty essentials, bandaids, etc.

I think the gown Kate Middleton wore to the BAFTA’s is my favorite yet

An article on Mary Kate and Ashley today. I loved them so much growing up, what about you?

I love the scalloped edge of these tortoise earrings

Martha Stewart’s recipe for homemade bubble bath

I loved seeing Ashley Brooke’s pictures of behind the scenes at Kate Spade. The glitter nails make me so happy!

This Corgi mug is darling, do you think the Queen might have one?

Some good advice on what to splurge on and what to save on

My old iPad case was literally falling apart, so after delaying the purchase for a while I finally bit the bullet and bought this dusty pink one. I love it! It’s so light and the color is beautiful. It’s also a good reminder of what a difference a small update to things we already own can make.

I love all of these glitter nail manicures!

I hope you all have aw wonderful weekend!

Last Minute Valentine's Day Ideas

red roses
red roses

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! Whether you are spending the day with your fella, your girlfriends, or by your self (I know I’ve done all three over the years) I hope you are taking some time to enjoy yourself and feel special! I think you are all amazing, and I am so grateful you take the time to come and read my blog every day and leave such sweet comments. So, will you all be my Valentine?

If you haven’t got any set plans yet, here are a few easy ideas to make the night feel special:

-Watch your favorite movie with some comfort food. For me that means a big bowl of pasta and Beauty and the Beast.

-Treat yourself to a bouquet of flowers for your counter. I love the Trader Joe’s bouquets!

-Go with some friends to the movies - a movie on a weeknight can feel like such a treat! I just saw the Lego Movie 2 and it was really, really good. Very fun and clever, just like the first one.

-Cook a dinner in that includes some “special” foods that you wouldn’t normally splurge on. Cooking with girlfriends is so much fun, and it’s also one of my favorite date nights! Or, put on the newest episode of RHOBH and cook for yourself while dancing to the drama.

-Take some time to read that book you’ve been meaning to or start that craft project that you’re excited about.

-Have an at home spa night with friends or yourself. You could even video chat with friends who are far away while you apply face masks and nail polish.

-Finally, binge watch Parks and Rec. If you are even a little be down this Valentine’s Day that show will perk you right up, I promise!

Happy Valentine’s Day!

A Makeup Trick That Makes Your Eyes Look Bigger

A Makeup Trick That Makes Your Eyes Look Bigger

Do you ever wonder how models get their eyes to look super large and wide awake? Well, this is the trick! It’s very easy and you can use your current eye makeup to do it.

  1. No makeup

  2. Take your favorite eyeliner and line the bottom of your eye. Line as close to your eyelashes as possible, and if any winds up on your waterline just take your finger and wipe it away. I like to use a dark brown eyeliner, I think it looks less severe. My current favorite is the Charlotte Tilbury eye kohl in Audrey.

  3. Find a dark colored eyeshadow and a flat slanted eyeliner brush. It’s key that the brush makes a very thin line. I used the Urban Decay Naked Basics 2 palette (an all time favorite) and this brush.

  4. Take the angled brush and tap it into the eyeliner and then stamp the eyeliner on the outer corner of your eye so it forms a sideways V. Stamp it as close to your eyelashes as possible.

  5. Use a fluffy eyeshadow brush to blend out the shadow. To do this you swipe the brush back and forth along the bottom and the top of your eye where the eyeshadow is. I love the MAC 217 brush since the bristles are very dense and good at blending, but any small blending brush will work.

  6. Apply mascara to both your top and bottom eyelashes. Make sure none smudges below your eye, but if it does simply clean it up with a Q-tip.

  7. Here the eye on the right has makeup. Isn’t it amazing what a difference it makes?!

  8. Finished product.

Tell me, how do you normally apply eyeshadow? Do you have any favorite new techniques? I love learning new ways to use the makeup I already have, don’t you?

A Pop of Red

A Pop of Red

I saw this sweater in J.Crew recently and I couldn’t resist! It’s such a beautiful pop of red, which pairs perfectly with all of the blue jeans I’ve been wearing recently (not to mention Valentines Day). I love that depending on what accessories you pair it with it can look casual or vintage glam. Plus, it has a nice weight to it which means that if I’m not outside for too long I can forego a coat when I wear it!

Sweater / Top Knot Headband (or the navy is on clearance!) /Pumps / Jeans / Tank / Similar bag

I chose to make this long sweater blazer feel more vintage glam, which has been my ascetic of choice lately. I’ve been trying to keep in mind my favorite ascetics and colors to wear when I go shopping so that my closet looks cohesive and it’s easy to mix and match all of my items. Red and vintage glam are at the top of both lists. (That, and things that are warm and cozy :) Also, the sweater is very roomy. If you don’t want it to hang quite so loosely, absolutely go down a size.

To play up the vintage charm I paired the sweater with my favorite Chanel look a like pumps, which now come in pink too! The heel is the perfect height and compared to how much Chanel shoes cost they are a bargain. They come in pink now too. They go with pretty much everything, and I love the cutouts on the side. I think they make the classic silhouette feel modern.

I also wore this new top knot headband. I’ve been seeing them on Instagram a lot lately, and was excited to find a black one for a good price at Anthropologie. I love the way the headband has such an Old Hollywood glamorous feel, like something Grace Kelly would wear, and yet is very on-trend right now. Those are my favorite kind of accessories!

Here are some other hair accessories I’ve been admiring lately:

What are your favorite accessories? Do you like headbands too? I used to wear so many and then stopped for a while; I’m so excited to see the trend come back!

Jordan Marsh Blueberry Muffins

Jordan Marsh Blueberry Muffins

Does anyone remember Jordan Marsh? It was a New England department store that closed it’s doors when I was little, but I still remember going there with my mom. I had forgotten about it until I was googling “the best blueberry muffin recipe” a few days ago and Jordan Marsh kept coming up. I don’t remember this, but apparently their blueberry muffins were a cult favorite. Once I read that I knew I had to make them - muffins so good that people go to a department store for them instead of a bakery? Sign me up!

Jordan Marsh Blueberry Muffins

Well, they turned out even better than I expected. Super moist, not too sweet, and not at all greasy. I think the secret is all the blueberries! They were very simple to make, too. Other than the blueberries i had all of the ingredients on hand. Here’s how to make them:

Jordan Marsh Blueberry Muffins

Preheat oven to 375 and grease a muffin pan (I really like the Bakers Delight Spray or the Pam bakers spray). Cream together 1/2 cup unsalted butter and one cup sugar. Add in 2 eggs, one at a time. In a separate bowl whisk together 2 teaspoons baking powder, 1/2 teaspoon salt and 2 cups of flour. Gradually beat these dry ingredients into the creamed butter mixture along with 1/2 cup milk and 1 1/2 tsp vanilla. Once everything is just combined stir in 2 1/2 cups of fresh blueberries. Bake for 25-30 minutes and enjoy with a hot cup of coffee or tea!

Jordan Marsh Blueberry Muffins

Do you remember Jordan Marsh? What’s your favorite muffin recipe? I’m also partial to cranberry walnut, I’m excited to make those next!

Happy Friday!

Glitter Handbag

What a fast week! I feel like I blinked and it was Wednesday, and now it’s Friday! It was a pretty basic week, filled with errands and to do lists and a new puzzle, and it flew by. I’m looking forward to a fun weekend ahead. I have a few good books lined up, and my husband, JD, and I are celebrating Valentine’s Day a little early. When the holiday falls on a weekday we like to go out the weekend before, and then on Valentine’s Day itself we stay in and have a nice homemade dinner. This year we are going to go see the LEGO movie and I think go to Legal Seafoods, though I’m not positive about the restaurant. For Valentine's Day itself I’m making homemade pasta and maybe lava cakes. I haven’t finalized the dessert yet, but I’m pretty excited to make it! I love a good themed baked good.

Here are some of the things I enjoyed online this week -
