July Reading List

public.jpeg

July was such a bust month, with family and friends visiting and lots to do, that unfortunately I didn’t read as much as usual, especially since a few of the books took a while. With that said, however, I really liked a few of the books I read and am excited to dig into a few good beach reads when we go to the beach for our anniversary next weekend! I tend to do lots of reading in vacation, it’s my favorite type of r&r. Here’s what I read in July if you are looking for any books for your next trip -

There There - 3/5 - I thought this book was really good but also really slow. It is about a number of families that are all connected, though they don’t know it, and their journey to a large Native American pow wow. It talks a bit about being Native American in modern urban America, and left me with a lot to think about.

Normal People - 3/5 - I found this to be a really quick and relatively enjoyable read. It takes place in Ireland and is about two friends from high school who have a strong romantic connection, but keep breaking up and getting back together. It focuses a lot on fitting it and being considered normal, and how that changes depending on your environment. My problem with with the book is that I feel like it left on a complete cliffhanger, and it could have ended a little sooner or gone in a little longer to wrap things up.

American Spy - 4/5 - I really enjoyed this book! It is about Marie, an African American woman from Queens who grows up to become a federal agent and spy. I loved the way the book discussed racial politics, foreign policy, and even the US’s policy in communism while still being full of action. It really kept me on my toes and was a lot of fun to read, but it also made me think a lot about the world. The perfect combination!

My Brilliant Friend - 4/5 - This is the first book in the Neapolitan Novels, a book series that is about two friends growing up in Naples, Italy. It is a sweet and thoughtful look at friendship and growing up, and it is beautifully written. What’s truly amazing is that it is translated from the original Italian! It is also a series in HBO right now if anyone is interested!

Did you read anything good in July?

9 vegetarian recipes even carnivores will love

This gorgeous Tuckernuck scarf is down to $36

The Chef Show on Netflix is the perfect weekday watch. If you loved the movie you’ll love the show!

If Disney characters donned designer bags

Tina Fey and Ted Danson are working in a new show and I’m pumped!

Butter Cookie Recipe

Butter cookie recipe

I made this recipe for butter cookies years ago, back when JD and I were dating, and he has been requesting it ever since. Yesterday I finally fulfilled my promise to bake them for him, and I’m so sorry it took this long! The recipe is so easy and makes so many cookies, it’s the perfect dish to make for a party or bring to a friend’s house. Plus, they pair perfectly with a cup of tea and a good book, which is truly the dream combination!

Butter cookie recipe

Here’s the recipe:

  • 1 pound unseated butter, softened

  • 1 1/4 cups sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 tbsp sour cream

  • 2 tsp vanilla

  • 5 cups flour

  • 3-9 tbsp cocoa powder (optional)

  • 3-9 tbsp sugar (optional)

butter cookie recipe

Cream together the sugar and butter until smooth. Beat in the egg, vanilla and sour cream. Gradually stir in the flour until well combined. Divide dough into thirds. If you want to make chocolate cookies mix 3 tbsp cocoa and 3 tbsp sugar into each third. Roll each third into a log and wrap in wax paper; refrigerate for several hours. Slice the logs into 1/4 inch thick discs and bake at 350 for 15 minutes. Enjoy!

Five Minute Makeup Routine For Busy Mornings

five minute makeup routine

Busy mornings call for a streamlined beauty routine, am I right? Even before the start to the craziest day, though, I still like to feel polished and put together. Over time I’ve found that the easiest way to do that when you are in a rush is to have a go to look with go to products so that you can put them on quickly and efficiently, even without a mirror! Here’s my routine -

  1. First I fill in my eyebrows with Anastasia brow definer in taupe and brush it out with the spoolie at the end.

  2. I put on Supergoop's new eyeshadow in either Daydream or First Light all over my lids. It adds a touch or sparkle and color and you can never go wrong with extra sun protection.

  3. I pile one two to three coats of Glossier’s lash slick. It lasts all day without flaking or smudging and if you put on a few layers it still has drama. (use my link for 10% off your first order!)

  4. I put Coola’s mineral sunscreen on all over my face.

  5. Charlotte Tilbury’s Magic Foundation is my favorite! It has the perfect amount of coverage and lasts all day. I use shade 3.

  6. I set my brows with Benefit’s brow gel in clear.

  7. I apply Charlotte Tilbury Flawless Filter on my cheek bones, bridge of my nose, cupid’s bow and chin and blend with my fingers. This adds a nice glow and makes your face look more dimensional (foundation can make you look flat if you don’t add any other face products on top).

  8. I love blush! My current go to is a pink Chanel powder blush. It adds a pretty pop of pink that brightens your whole complexion.

  9. I apply bronzer to my forehead, nose, chin and cheek with a large fluffy brush. I fell in love the Tom Ford Soleil bronzer when my makeup artist used it for my wedding.

  10. I line my lips with Charlotte Tilbury Pillow talk and fill them in.

  11. Finally I apply Fresh Sugar Lip Balm in Petal throughout the day.

What’s your go to makeup routine?

Happy Friday!

summer hydrangea flowers

Happy Friday everyone! Did you have a nice week? Survive the heat? We’ve had weather alerts for over 100 degrees and I am happily willing to admit that it is not my cup of tea. Oh well; I’ll just have to embrace the sunscreen life ; )

Summer Staples That Never Go Out Of Style

Summer Staples That Never Go Out of Style

Summer outfits are some of my favorite to style. That are so fun and easy, and the same key pieces can be relied on season after season. I love knowing I can purchase a few classic pieces and look fresh and stylish while walking around in the summer sun every season. Plus, it’s so easy to be bright when you don’t have to put a coat over your favorite top! I also feel like timeless summer staples are so much more attainable than winter clothes - the perfect summer sandal that’s been in style since the 60’s (Jack Rogers Palm Beach sandals!) are so much more affordable than the classic riding boot…anyone else agree?

I always reach for whites, navy, and pops of color. With a statement earring of course! I think of it as a vintage prep ascetic. Here are all of my summer favorites that you can wear season after season, because they never go out of style -

  1. Classic “dress-up dress” - Gal Meets Glam and on sale!!

  2. White jean jacket

  3. A striped 3/4 top for breezy nights or days by the ocean

  4. Comfortable shorts you can wear all day every day

  5. A flattering striped top

  6. A fun coverup that looks good with all of your swim suits

  7. Fun statement earrings that add a lot of personality to any outfit

  8. A swimsuit that you feel like a million bucks in

  9. The classic summer sandal

  10. An easy sundress that is super comfortable in the heat and appropriate for all occasions

What are you wardrobe staples?

Nordstrom’s Lemon Ricotta Cookies

Nordstrom's Lemon Ricotta Cookies

My parents came to DC for the 4th which was so fun! We saw lots of sights and fireworks and ate great food; lots of wonderful memories were made! On their last day here it started pouring, and we wanted to get lunch somewhere where we could drive and park without getting soaking wet. Enter the Nordstrom cafe (side note: it’s hard to eat out in a city and find connected, covered parking!) Along with some good sandwiches we indulged on their Lemon Ricotta cookies and they were sooo good. After one bite I knew I had to make them myself, and on my next trip to the grocery store I got the ingredients to do just that.

Nordstrom's Lemon Ricotta Cookies

I used this recipe. I put the dough in the refrigerator for 4 hours before I froze it for 6 hours, and I baked them for 24 minutes (instead of 22). You can also freeze the dough overnight if that works better.

Nordstrom's Lemon Ricotta Cookies

It made about two batches of large cookies. My biggest piece of advice is to frost all of the cookies immediately after baking the icing. If you wait at all the lemon juice starts to separate. In addition, store them in the refrigerator.

have you made any delicious cookies recently? What kind?!

Summer Beach Reads - My June Reading List

Summer Beach Reads

June was full of so many books that I think are perfect for days by the beach or lounging by the pool! Not trash, but very fast paced and enjoyable. I can’t wait to read a few more of these in July! To me, the hot days of summer are perfect for these types of books - not too light, addicting and just plain enjoyable! Here’s what I read -

More Than Words - 4.5/5 - I loved this book. It is by the author of The Light We Lost, which I also truly enjoyed (though it’s sad). More Than Words is the story of a New York debutante who lost her mother as a young girl and has recently lost her father. After his passing she learns some family secrets that change her perspective on her parents and also who she is, and what she values. The writing is beautiful and the characters were very likable.

Necessary People - 4/5 - This book is dark and twisted without going over the edge into creepy. It is the story of Stella and Violet, best friends from college who move to New York City together after graduation. Stella is a rich party girl, and Violet is a hard working girl with a poor background and a nonexistent relationship with her family. Violet aspires to become a news producer and when Stella starts competing with her in the workplace things get ugly, fast. It’s one of those books you can’t put down, and the ending is a complete surprise!

The Kiss Quotient - 3/5 - There were parts of this book I really liked and parts I didn’t care for. The book is about Stella, a lovely young woman with Autism who is struggling in her efforts to date. She decides to practice by hiring a male escort, Michael, who is a male version of Vivian in Pretty Woman. I loved the getting to know the characters, and thought the love story was sweet. What I didn’t like was how parts of it read like a harlequin romance. It was a lot, and I ended up skipping over multiple scenes, just FYI.

Park Avenue Summer - 4.5/5 - What a fun read! This book follows Alice, a young woman from Ohio who moves to New York to pursue her dream of becoming a professional photographer. Along the way she becomes the secretary for Helen Gurly Brown, a true person who transformed Cosmopolitan into the woman’s magazine it is today. Following Alice on her journey of self-discovery in 1960’s New York was so fun and cool, it makes you want to put on a mod banana shift for a night on the town!

I Am Madame X - 3/5 - This book is a fictional account of the figure behind John Singer Sargent’s famous painting Madame X. I enjoyed reading about Paris in the 1870s and 1880s, and enjoyed the characters (except her mother!). Plus, reading about the art world is always entertaining to me, and I loved reading about Paris’s reaction to the Impressionist movement.

Happy Friday!

Washington DC hydrangea

I hope you all had a wonderful week! Mine was spent getting back on track after a weekend away, cookies, candies from FAO Schwartz, and lots of work. The business will be worth it though, when I get to relax on Saturday and spent time with my parents when they arrive next week. They started talking about visiting for the 4th of July almost a year ago, I can’t believe the trip is actually here! This past year has just flown by for me - the phrase the days are long but the years are short is so true.

Here are some fun things I enjoyed online this week -

My purse of the summer, the Kate Spade Canvas Sam Bag, is on sale for under $100!

You can remove pen ink stains with hand sanitizer, and it really works!

I always love Carly’s Spotify playlists and she has a new one

Kelly’s mood boards for her master bedroom are giving me house envy!

Tuckernuck has a new packable hat line, these are so great for traveling

If Disney characters donned designer bags made me laugh

How to bring Old Hollywood into your home

I’ve been using a good old Clarisonic recently to exfoliate and my skin loves it!

Warby Parker makes bags now!

This shaken pina colada looks pretty great!
