Happy Friday!

Mt Vernon in the fall

Plus I’m going to the National Book Festival, and a number of my favorite authors are going to be there, and let’s just say I’m excited ; )

What about you, any fun plans for the weekend? Retiring your white shoes? I think I’ll keep mine out for a little longer, but we’ll see…

Cookie Pie Recipe

cookie pie recipe

Today I wanted to pop in quickly and encourage you all to make cookie pie! I used this recipe and it was so yummy and so easy - honestly the part that took the longest was waiting for the crust to cool before I added the filling! It’s basically a shortbread cookie crust filled with chocolate chip cookie filling. How can you go wrong with that? Trick question, you can’t ; )

Sailing at the Inn at Perry Cabin

Sailing at the Inn at Perry Cabin

While we were at the Inn at Perry Cabin JD surprised me with a sailing expedition. I’m always loved the idea of sailing, and even attended sailing camp on the Cape when I was younger, so it was the perfect surprise. We set out around 4 when the air wasn’t too hot and the sun was low in the sky.

We sailed around Miles River for a couple hours of peaceful bliss. The Captain was kind enough to teach us all about the boat and offer tips for where we can take sailing lessons in DC. Apparently there are a few sailing clubs that might take us on as deck hands during a race! Crazier things have happened, so fingers crossed!

Sweater / Shorts / Sneakers / Hat

The last time I was on a sailboat a hurricane was coming in, so the wind on the river was decidedly more peaceful. The Captain even let me steer for a minute. Don’t I look like I know what I’m doing? ; )

Sailing at the Inn at Perry Cabin

It was the perfect addition to our weekend and such a clever way to give a themed gift - cotton is the traditional gift for a second anniversary, and the sails were made of canvas!

If you go to St. Michaels I highly recommend taking some time on the water. There were kayakers, paddle boarders and boaters everywhere.

Do you sail? Any tips for a beginner?

Happy Friday!

Sailing at the Inn at Perry Cabin

Happy Friday Friends! Is it just me, or could the weekend not come fast enough? Also, and I know this is kind of blasphemous, but I’m over summer. I want it to be fall and I want it now. Don’t get me wrong, I love summer! But by mid August I need some Hygge in my life and I need it now. I started singing the Summer song from Frozen about fall, haha. Maybe I’ll write out my lyrics and post them here…

Anywho, here are some links that made me happy this week-

Upping Your Key Chain Game

For years know I haven’t had a keychain on my keyring. I don’t like carrying around any extra weight, and most key fobs are so bulky and heavy. Recently, however, I’ve liked the idea of looking into my bag for my keys and seeing something bright and happy instead of black keys against a black lining that I can’t find. I want something light, timeless and cute. Here are all my favorites!

The Inn At Perry Cabin

Inn at Perry Cabin

As I mentioned on Friday, we went to the Inn at Perry Cabin for a few days for our anniversary. It was heaven! The Inn sits on the water, and the entire place radiates a sense of peace and calm. Along with a gorgeous landscape, there are outdoor fire pits throughout the property, along with a fireplace in the room, which I loved. We spent most of days reading in front of the water, then the pool and then back to the water with lots of great food in between. We also explored the charming down town, and went on a sail boat ride (it was one of the best surprises ever, I’ll share the pictures soon!)

The Inn’s Adirondack chairs were so comfortable, and the temperature in the shadow as perfect to sit by the water and read for hours. I wore my packable bow hat, which I’ve loved for years. The bow on the back is so classic and it does an amazing job keeping the sun out of your eyes. Plus, you can squish it when you pack and it comes back into life. I love how the hat looks which shorts and a tee, or a sundress like I’m wearing here. This one has bows in the back and a short ruffled sleeve; these cute details really elevate the dress and I love the pink pattern! Bows on the dress and bows on my hat - that’s a good day ; )

I love this hot pink dress! It has ruffled sleeves, a ruffled hem and a sash you can knot or tie in a bow. The tailoring makes it super flattering, and it can be dressed up or down. Plus the print has lobsters on it, so cheeky! I wore it to see Frozen, and it’s since become a party dress favorite!

We sat on the porch in the morning and watched the sun rise over the water. A glorious way to start the day!

Overall it was some much needed romantic relaxation at a beautiful spot I can’t wait to return to. I’m thinking a cozy fall getaway is going to be in order in a few months! The water surrounded by changing leaves and outdoor bonfires? Just heaven.

July Reading List

public.jpeg

July was such a bust month, with family and friends visiting and lots to do, that unfortunately I didn’t read as much as usual, especially since a few of the books took a while. With that said, however, I really liked a few of the books I read and am excited to dig into a few good beach reads when we go to the beach for our anniversary next weekend! I tend to do lots of reading in vacation, it’s my favorite type of r&r. Here’s what I read in July if you are looking for any books for your next trip -

There There - 3/5 - I thought this book was really good but also really slow. It is about a number of families that are all connected, though they don’t know it, and their journey to a large Native American pow wow. It talks a bit about being Native American in modern urban America, and left me with a lot to think about.

Normal People - 3/5 - I found this to be a really quick and relatively enjoyable read. It takes place in Ireland and is about two friends from high school who have a strong romantic connection, but keep breaking up and getting back together. It focuses a lot on fitting it and being considered normal, and how that changes depending on your environment. My problem with with the book is that I feel like it left on a complete cliffhanger, and it could have ended a little sooner or gone in a little longer to wrap things up.

American Spy - 4/5 - I really enjoyed this book! It is about Marie, an African American woman from Queens who grows up to become a federal agent and spy. I loved the way the book discussed racial politics, foreign policy, and even the US’s policy in communism while still being full of action. It really kept me on my toes and was a lot of fun to read, but it also made me think a lot about the world. The perfect combination!

My Brilliant Friend - 4/5 - This is the first book in the Neapolitan Novels, a book series that is about two friends growing up in Naples, Italy. It is a sweet and thoughtful look at friendship and growing up, and it is beautifully written. What’s truly amazing is that it is translated from the original Italian! It is also a series in HBO right now if anyone is interested!

Did you read anything good in July?

Butter Cookie Recipe

Butter cookie recipe

I made this recipe for butter cookies years ago, back when JD and I were dating, and he has been requesting it ever since. Yesterday I finally fulfilled my promise to bake them for him, and I’m so sorry it took this long! The recipe is so easy and makes so many cookies, it’s the perfect dish to make for a party or bring to a friend’s house. Plus, they pair perfectly with a cup of tea and a good book, which is truly the dream combination!

Butter cookie recipe

Here’s the recipe:

  • 1 pound unseated butter, softened

  • 1 1/4 cups sugar

  • 1 large egg

  • 2 tbsp sour cream

  • 2 tsp vanilla

  • 5 cups flour

  • 3-9 tbsp cocoa powder (optional)

  • 3-9 tbsp sugar (optional)

butter cookie recipe

Cream together the sugar and butter until smooth. Beat in the egg, vanilla and sour cream. Gradually stir in the flour until well combined. Divide dough into thirds. If you want to make chocolate cookies mix 3 tbsp cocoa and 3 tbsp sugar into each third. Roll each third into a log and wrap in wax paper; refrigerate for several hours. Slice the logs into 1/4 inch thick discs and bake at 350 for 15 minutes. Enjoy!
