The Best Sugar Cookie Recipe

I have been craving some home made cookies for weeks, and finally had the time over the weekend to make some. I love to bake, and have made a lot of cookies over the years, and finally found the best sugar cookie recipe. Carly originally posted the recipe a few years ago, and every time I used it the cookies are light and fluffy, the dough isn’t too sticky for cutouts, and they come out perfect. 

Best Sugar Cookie Recipe

You’ll need: 

- 2 sticks of butter

- 1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar

- 1 egg

- 2 tsp. vanilla

- 2 3/4 cups flour  

- 2 tsp. Baking powder

- 1 tsp. salt

Let the butter and egg sit out on the counter to come to room temperature. Next, use a mixer to cream together the butter and powdered sugar. Add in the vanilla and egg and mix to combine. In a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder and salt. Gradually add these dry ingredients to the butter mixture, and mix until the dough is fully combined. It shouldn’t be too sticky; if it is add a little more flour. Refrigerate for at least an hour (can be refrigerated overnight).

Roll out onto a clean surface dusted with flour. Cut out cookies in whatever shapes and sizes you wish, and bake at 400 for 6-8 minutes. Once the cookies are removed from the over, immediately remove from the baking sheet and place on a cooling rack - otherwise the cookies will continue cooking on the hot baking sheet.

If you choose to frost the cookies, here is a great royal icing recipe

 - 5 tbsp meringue powder

- 3/4 cup of water

- 1 tsp. cream of tarter  

- 2 lbs of powdered sugar

Best Sugar Cookie Recipe

Use the whisk attachment on your mixer to mix the meringue powder and water for 30 seconds. Add cream of tarter and mix another 30 seconds. Switch to the paddle attachments and add in the powdered sugar a little bit at a time. Combine until the icing is stiff enough to hold a point. Cover with a damp paper towel immediately so it doesn’t harden. Use a pastry bag and decorating tip to decorate. If you would like to use different colors, separate the frosting into different bowls and add a little food coloring to each one. Also, the frosting that you want to be the middle should be a thinner consistency. To thin, add more milk.
