Summer Bucket List

Summer Bucket List

The arrival of the summer heat has me day dreaming about all the fun summer activities I want tompartake in this year. Picnics, kayaking, trips to the beach, the list goes on and on! In order to make sure I actually do any of it, I’ve been working on my summer bucket list. Sometimes too many options can just be daunting, you know? A short(ish) list can make it a lot easier to make sure you actually accomplish what you want! So here’s my list:

  1. Take a trip to the beach and go in the ocean

  2. Eat all you can eat crabs somewhere fun

  3. Kayak down the Potomac

  4. Grill Friday night dinner outside

  5. Go on a romantic weekend getaway

  6. Finish knitting my cousin’s wedding afghan

  7. Watch fireworks over the Capital

  8. See a show (Aladdin is coming to town and I think that could be fun!)

  9. Go to a fair and ride the potato sacks

  10. Never get a bad sun burn

  11. Start wearing SOF in my hands daily

  12. Make homemade ice cream

Summer Haircare Tips

I don't know about you, but my hair feels so much heavier in the summer. It is so hot and humid, it just turns into a LOT and it doesn't feel healthy. This summer I finally feel like I have conquered my locks and added a lot of needed moisture and TLC and am excited to share my summer haircare tips with all of you.

Cheers to healthy hair!

Cheers to healthy hair!

First, it is important to remove buildup. A lot of times what feels like dry and brittle hair is actually an excess of product buildup. I use a baking soda scrub to try and remove it - mix together 1/3 cup baking soda and 4tbsp water and message into your hair. Leave it on for 10-15 minutes (I put a shower cap on over it) and then rinse thoroughly.

I generally wash my hair every few days since it is naturally dry, but in the summer I wash it more often because of all of the heat and humidity. I also switch out my favorite sulfate free shampoo for some good old fashioned Head and Shoulders. I want my scalp clean.

Try and avoid heat styling as much as possible. It damages hair, and in the humidity it just doesn't last anyway.

I use a wet brush to brush out my tangles when it's wet. It doesn't pull or break my hair, which is important since hair is more fragile when it's wet. Brushing it also helps it air dry better since I'm not using heat.

Finally, for that last bit of TLC I like to add in some hair oil while my hair is drying. The Davines OI is my favorite, and Moroccanoil is very good too.

The Best Accessories for Summer

I've been buying some fun accessories lately to go with the clothes I already have. A good accessory is a great way to add some glam to your look, to update clothes to match the current season, and also to make basic pieces into an "outfit." This year some of the big trends are tassel earrings, H sandals and straw bags. There are so many great options, here are my favorites!

The Best Accessories for Summer

Scarf / Invisibobble Hair Tie / Straw BagBeach Towel / Gold Earrings / Beaded Bracelet / Lipgloss / Purse / Pedicure / Flip Flops / White Sandals / H Slides / Dainty Bracelet / Oval Sunglasses / Aviators / Espadrilles / White Slides / Statement Earrings

Scarf - I love this pretty light pink scarf to tie around my ponytail, around my handbag or around my neck.

Invisibobble Hair Tie - These hair ties are amazing because they don't dent your hair.

Straw Bag - I love the beautiful flower pattern on this straw bag. It's the perfect size to serve as a tote or a small beach bag.

Beach Towel - I think the yellow stripes and fringe on this towel are perfect and make for the perfect accessory at the beach or by the pool.

Gold Earrings - Aren't these gorgeous? They are a neutral too, so they'll go with all your summer outfits.

Beaded Bracelet - I think the blue and white beads add the perfect amount of glam and prep to any outfit.

Lipgloss - Lipgloss is in again!

Purse - My favorite purse style right now is a structured lady like bag, and this one is so cute. Plus, they have quad pay so you can buy it like you would like something on HSN.

Pedicure - A perfect off white pedicure is a must to match your cute sandals.

Flip Flops - I love the lobsters on these! Aren't they so cute, especially with the bows!

White Sandals - You guys know I love my Jacks!

H Slides - I have seen the expensive version of these sandals everywhere - they are Hermes and cost over $700. These Steven ones look almost exactly the same and are under $100.

Dainty Bracelet - I think this bracelet is both dainty and cute; I love the slight amount of sparkle.

Oval Sunglasses - This is my favorite sunglass shape right now, and white sunglasses are so big right now. Also, these oval ones are under $20.

Aviators - My favorite sunglasses of al time! They are so pretty in the rose gold color, and also timeless.

Espadrilles - You can't go wrong with espadrille wedges in summer.

White Slides - If you want white summer sandals but don't like Jack Rogers, I think these are really pretty and the slide shape is very in.

Statement Earrings - Finally, some tassel statement earrings make every outfit fun and glamorous. I love this lilac color, which I'm seeing more and more, And that they mix wrap detailing with tassels.

How To Do A Perfect Cat Eye

This summer I am all about glowing skin and a classic cat eye. I think the cat eye can look intimidating to re-create, which is why I'm sharing my secret to a perfect cat eye. All you need is liquid liner and a mirror. I think it’s a classic look for summer since it makes a statement without a lot of dark eye makeup.

Products pictured: Kat Von D Tattoo Liner, Charlotte Tilbury Kissing Lipstick, Charlotte Tilbury Bronze and Glow, Anastasia Brow Gel, Anastasia Brow Definer, Urban Decay Naked Basics 2, Armani Blush, MAC brushes 217 and 239, Chanel Blush Brush, Sephora Concealer Brush, Charlotte Tilbury Wonder Glow, Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder

First, you need a good liquid or gel liner. My favorite liquid eyeliner is the Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper. It's a felt tipped pen, and the liner goes on precisely and lasts all day. It's also a true black. My favorite gel liner is the Estee Lauder gel liner, used with a liner brush that is bent at an angle like this one.

With the eyeliner in hand, it's four easy steps on each eye. I drew them above. First, draw a line from the outside corner of your eye to as far out as you want the wing to go. I generally draw it between 1/4 and 1/8 of an inch at a slightly upward angle. Next, line the top of your lash line and connect it to the wing.

Third, draw a line from the top of the wing directly across towards your noise. The wing should now be the outline of a triangle. Finally, fill in the triangle. If you want a more dramatic cat eye, you can also make the line on top of your lash line thicker on the outer half.

Repeat on the other side. Don't feel like you need to make them match perfectly on the first try. You can use makeup remover, or eye cream, on a Q-Tip to adjust the lines until they are perfect. Also, if you already did the rest of your makeup eye cream works better, since it won't erase everything.

Here's the finished look. After I lined my eyes I added a lot of mascara, and added some eyeshadow in the buff shade of the Naked Basics 2 palette. I wanted to keep the rest of my face bright and glowy, so I used Charlotte Tilbury Light Wonder mixed with Wonder Glow, and did a light contour with the Bronze and Glow palette and a light pink Armani blush. I wore Charlotte Tilbury lipliner and lipstick too. I really love her products right now, the texture and colors are just beautiful and fool proof to apply. Finally, my earrings are these flowers from Baublebar. Aren't they just so fun?!
